August 15th marked an important holiday for Ticos: Dia de la Madre or Mother’s Day, based on the Catholic holy day celebrating the Assumption of Mary. Matriarchs run the household in traditional families, but on this day many are treated to a special meal and gifts from their children and husbands. Some families even raise a pig to be ready for this annual event.
This National holiday is a day off for banks, small businesses and employees so don’t expect to run errands on this date; do, however, wish your Tica friends and neighbors a “feliz dia de la madre!” Tierra Pacifica would like to honor all the mothers in our community. These are great customs to be exposed to and a chance to take part in Tico culture!
