Costa Rica topped the Happy Planet Index (HPI) for the second time, as measured by nef (the new economics foundation). The HPI strives to measure global well-being and relates those findings to human progress. 151 countries were analyzed to determine the extent to which they deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people who live there.
Costa Rica is by no means a “rich” nation, but that doesn’t stop Ticos from being happy people. This little country is making a global name for itself as an emerging economic market, as seen in the recent Ernst & Young report, and now as a country that walks the difficult line of delivering long, happy lives to its residents while minimizing environmental repercussions. Nef reports, “[Costa Rica] has the second highest life expectancy in the Americas, …and a per capita Ecological Footprint one third the size of the USA’s.”
“Overall, the HPI reflects the fact that while the challenges faced by rich resource-intensive nations and those with high levels of poverty and deprivation may be very different, the end goal is the same: to create long and happy lives that don’t cost the Earth.”
