Thinking about making a move to Guanacaste but not sure about some of the details, such as moving your belongings and furnishing your new home? Well relax! We’ve got you covered. The Plaza Tierra Pacifica Welcome Center is staffed with people who will help you find the services you need for your move to Costa Rica.
But what can one expect when stocking and furnishing a home in Costa Rica? Though you won’t have a Pottery Barn, HomeDepot, or Target around the corner, (you did know you were moving out of the US, right?) you will be able to hire a moving service for your existing belongings or find new ones here.
We spoke with Tierra Pacifica homeowner, Kim Frigault, about how she accomplished the task and she shared her perspective on “scavenger-hunting” in Costa Rica.
TP: To stock and furnish your new home in Tierra Pacifica, did you ship items down from the US?
Kim: We brought 14 tupperware-like containers from the US, all consisting of clothes, household goods, dishes, pans, etc, and our two mountain bikes. We used a moving service to help us with that.
TP: If you bought things in Costa Rica, where did you find them?
Kim: We found our appliances in San Jose, our outdoor terrace furniture at the Santa Cruz ferria, and our mattresses for our beds in Santa Cruz as well. Our bed frames were made by a local carpenter.
TP: What did you find challenging about stocking your home here?
Kim: Well, it’s funny. I relate it to a scavenger hunt. It can take a long time to piece together what you need to stock your home. I have ongoing “US lists” so that when friends & family come we get bits and pieces. We also pick up bits and pieces when we go back. When we come across something on our list here, we celebrate!
TP: Any other words of advice for a future Costa Rican homeowner?
Kim: If you have patience and like a scavenger hunt you can probably find something close to what you’re looking for. Otherwise, if you find a good shipper, it might be worth bringing furniture, kitchen supplies, fixtures, and lighting down with you.
Regardless of your budget and personal style, we can help you find what you’re looking for at Tierra Pacifica. We even have furnished condos as an option. Stop by the Welcome Center to talk with our staff about your move!
